New Hartford is located in Litchfield County, Connecticut approximately twenty miles northwest of the city of Hartford. The mostly rural community of New Hartford is home to a population of approximately 6,000 residents who enjoy the small town ambiance, beautiful scenic vistas, and gorgeous New England weather afforded by the city's location within the humid continental climate zone.
New Hartford's long and storied history goes back 211 years to the days of Jedediah Sanger, a pioneer from New Hampshire who brought his family to the area in 1789. The New Hartford Historical Society is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers committed to the assimilation and preservation of local history through exhibits and collections containing documents, artifacts, and historic memorabilia. Historic sites of note include the Pine Meadow Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and featuring examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne architectural styles, and Gillette's Grist Mill, one of the last remaining 19th century mills in the state, located on the banks of the Nepaug River.
Fly fishing in spring, canoeing and kayaking in summer, spectacular foliage-covered hills in the fall, and snow skiing in winter, are all activities that this community offers throughout the year. Each changing season presents a new aspect of this lovely city's charm! Populated with recreational venues and punctuated with annual festivals and fairs, the city of New Hartford features something for everyone!
New Hartford is home to the popular ski mountain, Ski Sundown, where skiing enthusiasts can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in a variety of styles that include freestyle, cross-country, and alpine. Ski Sundown hosts a number of competition and winter events each year, including A Taste of the Litchfield Hills, an enormously popular festival held each September that features vendor shopping, live entertainment, and samplings of a variety of local foods and wines.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy activities available at Lake McDonough, located just minutes from the center of the city, featuring fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking, and swimming. A unique feature of the lake is the Braille Trail, a fully accessible nature trail located on the west side of the lake that features Braille signage and a system of ramps and railings to accommodate the blind and physically challenged. Satan’s Kingdom State Recreation Area is another popular destination for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and swimming.
For hikers and nature lovers, Ratlum Mountain and the Peoples State Forest provide for an enjoyable hike amidst the scenic vistas of the northwestern Connecticut hills, while mountain bikers will enjoy Nepaug State Forest, featuring a five-mile loop that provides great riding conditions during pleasant weather.
