Farmington is located in Hartford County, Connecticut approximately ten miles west of the city of Hartford. Incorporated in 1645, Farmington is known as the "Mother Town," due to the distinction of being partitioned to form nine separate central Connecticut cities. The city’s long and storied history is celebrated and preserved by the Farmington Historical Society through exhibits, lectures, and special events relevant to the history of the city. Local historic sites of note include the Hill-Stead Museum, a designated National Historic Landmark and outstanding example of Colonial Revival architecture that sits on 152 acres of fields and woodlands and houses the works of such masters as Monet, Degas, Whistler, Cassatt, and Manet. The Stanley-Whitman House, a circa 1720 residential dwelling in the Post Medieval architectural style, houses a museum and designated Living History Center that allows visitors to experience life as it was lived by Connecticut’s earliest settlers. The museum sponsors the annual Stanley-Whitman Charity Golf Tournament held each May at the Tunxis Plantation Golf Club.
Opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation abound in and around the city of Farmington! Hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers will enjoy the Farmington River Trail, built on the former rail corridor of the Central New England Railroad. The trail runs from the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Farmington to the Simsbury town limits. Lake Garda Dam is the perfect fishing destination, with a good supply of fish that includes sunfish, sucker, and rock bass, while theFarmington and Pequabuck rivers are excellent for flatwater paddling and canoeing.
The Winding Trails Summer Day Camp is a local, not-for-profit organization that serves Farmington and surrounding communities with year-round recreational and educational activities. Activities offered at the camp include fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, archery, arts and crafts, and rock climbing, just to name a few.
Conveniently located to Interstate 84 and State Route 9, Farmington is within minutes of Bradley International Airport, Robertson Airport in Plainville, and the city of Hartford.
